An 11-year-old girl was critically injured in a boating accident in Tampa on October 23, according to ABC News. According to Florida Fish and Wildlife she was tubing before being struck by the propeller while climbing back into the boat. She is currently listed in critical condition. The accident occurred behind her home in the Avila community. She was transported to a local hospital and her identity was not released.

“We always want to be cautious and cognizant of what’s going on actually out on your boat,” said George Wells of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission.

Many boaters seem to think this was a preventable accident. You must remember to turn off your prop as people are getting on and off the boat. This sounds like common sense but these types of accidents happen more often than you would guess.

“Always kill the motor off either having them out there swimming or anything like that, it’s just a precaution,” said Tony Zorilla, a boater from Riverview. “It’s just being safe and being conscious about your surroundings.”
