The National Highway Safety Administration is requiring all car makers to equip their vehicles with side curtain airbags by 2013. These airbags protect the head and torso, especially in auto accidents involving side impact, such as when a car is “t-boned” at an intersection. According to the NHTSA, these measures will save 311 lives per year, in addition to preventing over 350 serious, life debilitating injuries. In fact, 28% of all car accident deaths are due to side impacts, and that does not take into account the serious brain injuries which often leave the victims with severe neurological problems that are common with that type of auto collision. Although these measures will help save lives, accidents still occur- so it is best to drive cautiously and to carry plenty of insurance in case of a worst case scenario.
