Erika Roman, DJ for 95.3, was killed May 1st when she lost control of her vehicle on the Florida Turnpike. She crashed her car when she tried to avoid a boat chair that had fallen onto the highway. The owner of that chair has come forward to claim it and responsibility for the accident.
Florida Highway Patrol has said the the owner is a Deputy Fire Chief for Osceola County. He and his family were traveling to the Florida Keys towing a boat but did not realize the chair fallen off the boat. In fact, he actually thought someone had stolen the chair. But when we arrived in the Keys and learned of the crash, the deputy realized the chair was his and notified authorities.
While FHP says the deputy chiefwill likely be charged with misdemeanor "failure to secure a load resulting in serious bodily injury or death", he must be commended for taking responsibility in this tragic accident. It is a rare event these days to have someone come forward on their own accord and take responsibility. Kudos to the Chief!
