A cab driver picked up a fare near Universal, was directed to fake address, and was shot in the face. The driver is in the hospital fighting for his life in critical condition. Crime against cab drivers is a well known problem. In fact, drivers have been asking cab companies for years to offer protection. Simple measures like bullet proof glass partitions, panic buttons, alarms and cab cams cost little to nothing these days and would save lives and stop injuries to cabbies. Certainly these devices would cost a lot less than for the cost to treat this driver in intensive care and pay for disability for life. Being a cab driver is a high risk profession. They risk injury or death from auto accidents, now in addition to the risk of getting hit by a truck they risk getting hit by bullets. Let’s hope the big business corporations that run the cab industry nowadays will do the right thing to protect their drivers from these known dangers.
