An insurance agent who owned Family Insurance in Port Richey, Florida is permanently banned from the insurance business in Florida and went to jail.  The agent, Bruce Anthony Fonte is accused of selling fake homeowners’ insurance policies to families in Pasco, Hillsborough and Hernando Counties.  As a result, the Division of Insurance Fraud reported he left people without coverage during the 2003, 2004 and 2005 hurricane seasons.  The Tampa Times reports  a single mother of two had an unpaid insurance claim for almost $9,000.00.

This insurance agent took advantage of his customers who trusted him and profited off of them while putting them at risk.  He was charged with first-degree organized scheme to defraud and faces up to 30 years if convicted.

This is a good reminder that all Florida residents should take the time to review and update their insurance. Make sure you have received a policy and understand the terms. If you don’t, ask for assistance and get a second opinion from another agent.
