Concept art: A megaphone accouncing PRODUCT RECALL

More than 190,000 ceiling fans sold at Home Depot have been recalled due to reports of the fan blades detaching and flying off during use. The defect has resulted in personal injury and property damage, leading to the widespread recall.

According to the recall notice, published by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the affected fans are the Hampton Bay 54-inch Mara Indoor/Outdoor ceiling fans. These were sold in stores and online between April 2020 and October 2020. Their retail price is approximately $150. The recall indicates that 182,000 of the recalled fans were sold in the U.S. while 8,800 were sold in Canada.

The fans were largely distributed by the Fort Lauderdale-based company, King of Fans, and were exclusively sold at Home Depot. King of Fans reported receiving just under 50 reports of the fan blades detaching while in use. At least two consumers were struck by a fan blade after it had detached during use. Four reports were made involving property damage.

The recalled fans come in the following finishes and can be identified by the following UPC codes:

  • Matte white (UPC No. 082392519186)
  • Matte black (UPC No. 082392519193)
  • Black (UPC No. 082392599195)
  • Polished nickel (UPC No. 082392599188)

The defects were reportedly caused by a manufacturing error involving the assembly of the blade’s locking clip to the fan’s flywheel. Two screws connect the locking clip, and the defect resulted in one of these two screws not securing the fan blade properly to the flywheel. As a result, while the fan is in motion, the blade can detach.

The following YouTube video shows how consumers can identify whether their fans are defective and need to be replaced.  If you have purchased one of these fans, you should discontinue use immediately. Consumers can contact King of Fans for a replacement at (866) 433-1291, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST, or by email at MaraRecall@KingofFans.com.
