Toyota’s recent problems have now crossed over to its popular gas-electric hybrid Prius. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched an investigation into the brakes of the Prius, after receiving 124 complaints, including reports of 4 crashes. The complaints commonly describe a momentary loss of braking ability while traveling over uneven road surfaces, potholes or bumps. Toyota says it is evaluating the brake problems with its Prius, but has not determined whether it will issue a recall as of yet. Toyota blames a glitch in the vehicle’s computer system, and says it has already fixed new production vehicles.
This new problem facing Toyota is just another in a series of problems the world’s largest automobile manufacturer is facing. Several weeks ago, Toyota announced a halt in the sales and production of eight different models in the United States. Prior to the halt in sales, Toyota recalled millions of vehicles because of gas pedals that have the potential to result in the unintended acceleration of vehicles.
