Balcony Collapses Kills 5, Injures 7

Early this morning, near the University of California’s Berkeley campus, a balcony collapsed from the fourth floor of an apartment building. The incident occurred around 12:40 a.m. killing five and sending another seven to the hospital with serious injuries. The apartment complex is located about 2 blocks from the University and the victims were mostly students who had gathered to celebrate a 21st birthday. A spokeswomen for the Berkeley police stated that it was too early to determine what caused the balcony to give way. However, visually the balcony was completely torn apart from the apartment building and laying upside down on a balcony below.

Although it is too early to determine the cause of the balcony collapse in California, we have handled many cases involving injuries relating to improper maintenance of apartment complexes and buildings. In fact, we are handling a similar case right now involving negligent maintenance of balconies in an apartment complex.  That lack of inspection and improper maintenance resulted in a balcony collapse that seriously injured a woman who was a guest on the property.  All too often apartment complexes fail to properly inspect and maintain, or ineffectively repair, balconies resulting in a high risk of injury to the residents and guests. At this point, we can only keep the families of the injured parties in our prayers and wait to see the result of the investigation.
