Minimize Your Risk of a Dog Attack

Comments Off

Approximately 4.5 million people are bitten by dogs in America every year, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. One in five requires medical attention following the dog bite. Children, adult males and people with dogs in their home are the most at risk of attack. Here are some tips to keep in mind when it comes to canines:

  • Never approach a stranger’s or friend’s dog without first asking the owner’s permission
  • Avoid approaching a dog when it is near its food, toys or treats or may be sleeping
  • Be cautious of children who are fearful of dogs, or who may yell or scream or make sudden movements
  • Watch for any signs that a dog may be uncomfortable—closed mouth, snarled lips, etc.
  • Use your best judgment about a dog’s demeanor—better safe than sorry
  • Always keep babies and infants away from a dog—ANY dog
  • Avoid direct eye contact with a dog

These are helpful tips to keep in mind, whether you know the dog or not. Dogs can be unpredictable. Have you or a loved one been attacked by a dog?
