Florida Supreme Court Approves Use of "B.C.S" for Certified Lawyers

In a Florida Supreme Court Nov. 19 opinion is a new rule that allows board certified lawyers to use the letters "B.C.S." for board certified specialist. Only a board certified lawyer may use the term specialist or expert in an area of law in which they are certified.

So now consumers, judges and lawyers can look to the lawyers signature block for proof of certification. This is similar to the medical field where a physician can inform patients of board certification in the area of specialty in medicine. A board certified lawyer can use the following title:

Joe Lawyer B.C.S.

While that may not get them a cup of coffee at Starbucks, hopefully clients will recognize that having a B.C.S. next to a lawyers name is a mark of expertise, much more so than being a "former Sheriff's Detective" or similar nonsense bandied around on the television these days.

The amount of trial time and the need to continually keep the certification up goes a long way towards separating those that are really going to court and those that just advertise about it. This is a very good thing for all states and consumers.
