Massive I-4 Car Wreck Kills Three; Multiple Injuries Reported

Comments Off

The consistent problems that Tampa faces with I-4 traffic were brought into bold bas-relief during rush hour this morning when a fifty car pile-up killed three drivers and injured many more. Police struggled to reroute traffic on I-4 that was at a near standstill from the accident near Lakeland.

Traffic on the only major artery into Tampa from Lakeland and Orlando faced almost zero visibility from brush fire smoke and fog this morning, causing drivers who reached bottlenecked traffic to suddenly slam into cars coming into view. According to media reports, there were several tractor-trailers that overturned, including a tanker truck that burst into flames.

I-4 commuters have long registered traffic concerns about the busy thoroughfare, which sees a daily increase in use by approximately 1,000 vehicles. Florida DOT officials cite the busiest point of I-4 at the I-275 junction, where nearly 125,000 vehicles pass daily.
