‘If We Save One Life by Doing This, We're Doing Something Right’

This public service announcement (PSA) features Grammy-nominated singer and songwriter Justin Bieber promoting the Drive Safe anti-texting application from PhoneGuard, Inc. The application disables texting, emailing and keyboard functions on a mobile phone whenever it detects that a driver is moving faster than 10 miles per hour.

On March 6, 2012, the student leadership of Spanish River High School in Boca Raton, in conjunction with PhoneGuard as well as Global Maximus Productions, Channel One News and Florida Atlantic University, announced a National Day of Awareness Against Texting & Driving as well as a musical event scheduled for April 28, 2012. The “Rock To Live” Music Festival will be held at the recently opened Florida Atlantic University Stadium in Boca Raton, and PhoneGuard will be offering the application for free at the event. Spanish River High is asking all junior high and high school students across the United States to take a pledge not to text and drive.

“Our goal is to raise awareness about the dangers of texting and driving among teens, parents, and all drivers, as well as offer a solution to help curb the habit,” Ross Brenner, Sophomore Class President and originator of the national event, said in the press release. “There is already enough danger in the world, we don’t have to go out of our way to create our own.”

Brenner also said that student leadership decided to do something about distracted driving after he learned that Florida “is one of the few states that doesn’t have a law against texting and driving.” Brenner said that while new drivers are taught to drive without distractions because they can cause auto accidents, he and his classmates saw many friends and fellow students texting or talking on the phone while behind the wheel.

“As teens, we didn't feel that there's much we could do to cure AIDS, or cancer, but we saw that distracted driving has hurt and killed people of all ages. It's also entirely preventable,” Brenner said. “Our goal is to bring awareness to this issue and if we save one life by doing this, we're doing something right.”
